Town of Mashpee Conservation Commission
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, MA 02649
avoid adverse effects on sediment transport to tidal areas. Woods Hole Group preferred an alternative design
without the retaining wall, which slopes the bank to the top, reducing structural failure risk and aligning with
state and local regulations. Commissioners asked whether any retaining structure at the top would be
recommended; the consultants cautioned that with limited existing grade and loose sand, even small structures
could be vulnerable to erosion, storm wave overtopping, and high winds. They noted that the lower slope
revetment replaces an existing structure and generally complies with regulations.
Ms. Thornbrugh clarified that the preferred sloped-bank design (without the retaining wall)would not
change the delineated top of the coastal bank, maintaining the existing grade line and minimizing impact on
neighboring properties. Procedural questions confirmed that the Order of Conditions (OOC) had already been
issued for the approved alternative. It was suggested to consult with the property owner (and any of their
consultants) to potentially incorporate Woods Hole Group's recommendations into an amended order, which
could be administratively approved given the urgency of stabilizing the coastal bank. This approach would
allow work to proceed promptly to protect both the property and the bank while maintaining regulatory
compliance.
There was an emphasis on the urgency of consulting with the property owner and their consultant regarding
the coastal bank stabilization at 34 Triton Way. It was suggested that an amended Order of Conditions (OOC)
could be prepared based on the peer review recommendations, and this could be discussed further at the
August 28th meeting once more information is available. Staff noted that if the property owner agrees to the
proposed plan, the commission might consider administratively approving the work to allow it to commence
sooner, given the critical state of the coastal bank. Commissioners acknowledged this approach and agreed to
defer a final decision until the next meeting. The discussion concluded with appreciation to Woods Hole Group
for their work.
Updates: (*1 S minutes) (Public Comment solicited for each update—3 minutes per comment)
Updates below were not discussed.
o Red Brook Road Culvert(Waquoit Bay Research Reserve-grant assistance)
o Upper Quashnet Restoration
o Bylaw Review Subcommittee
o Johns Pond and Santuit Pond Milfoil
o Chop Chaque Bog Restoration
o Local Comprehensive Plan
o Herring Warden
o Harbor Management Committee
o Mashpee River Restoration
o Santuit Pond Fish Ladder—NRCS
o Guided Nature Tours—July Schedule
Communications/Correspondence: (Public Comment solicited for each update)
None.
Additional Topics:
(This space is reserved for topics that the Chairman did not reasonably anticipate would be discussed).
None.
*NOTE: INDIVIDUAL HEARINGS WILL BE LIMITED TO 15 MINUTES IN LENGTH
(More complex proposals may be granted additional time if necessary by the Chair)
3
