Freshwater Ponds Committee
August 19,2025

Recap of Cape Cod Ponds Network In Person Meting
Sue Dangel commended the organized and data-rich presentation recently led by the
Cape Cod Commission and the APCC. The Cape Cod Commission is a governmental
agency that guides regional land use planning, economic development, and regulates
developments with significant regional impacts on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. APCC
refers to the Association to Preserve Cape Cod, a non-profit environmental
organization.
While the content was scientifically robust, it was noted that the level of technical detail
made it difficult for the general public to understand. It was suggested that the town
consider hosting a community event focused on cyanobacteria, which could provide
accessible explanations of key issues and make the science more digestible for non-
experts.
It was also mentioned that participants appreciated the open discussion and sharing
session held at the end of the meeting.
OLD BUSINESS
Review Discuss and adopt Mission Statement
The committee reviewed the proposed mission statement
It was noted that the Freshwater Ponds Committee was previously approved
without the “advisory” designation in the mission statement, though the
committee functions as an advisory body.
There was agreement that the mission statement is generally well-written, with
only minor grammatical adjustments suggested.
One member emphasized the importance of the mission statement being broad
and comprehensive to encompass all relevant activities and responsibilities.
Questions arose regarding the committee’s relationship with other advisory
groups in neighboring towns or counties, with clarification that the mission
statement should reflect the committee’s focus solely within Mashpee and does
not imply responsibility beyond town boundaries.
A recommendation was made to explicitly state in the mission statement that the
Mashpee Freshwater Ponds Committee serves as an advisory group to the
Select Board
Motion made by Laurel Francke to adopt the mission statement with corrections as
stated.
Motion seconded by Jonathan Small.
Vote 9-0
4
