Freshwater Ponds Committee
August 19,2025

more with a goal. Clear, measurable goals are needed to evaluate progress and justify
meetings and efforts.
The committee discussed establishing a public reporting system where residents can
notify the committee if they observe issues on the ponds. While the committee lacks
regulatory authority, they agreed that having a reporting mechanism on the town
website would be beneficial. Individual pond representatives currently serve as liaisons
to relay information to the pond group. Fisher is working on a centralized contact list for
improved communication.
The committee agreed to delay finalizing long-term goals until more members have the
opportunity to contribute their individual visions. A process was established for members
to submit their proposed short-term and long-term goals to be compiled by Sue Dangel
for further discussion
Roles and Responsibilities
The committee discussed the importance of establishing liaisons to various town
boards, committees, and departments to better coordinate efforts and stay informed on
issues affecting freshwater ponds. The groups identified include the Select Board,
Sewer Commission, Zoning Board, Planning Board, Community Preservation
Committee (CPC), Environmental Oversight Committee (EOS), Finance Committee
(FINCOM), and Capital Improvement Committee.
There was a suggestion to frame these roles as “areas of interest” rather than
“expertise areas” to better reflect committee members’ capacities and interests.
Community Outreach and Education
A concern was raised that renters and many residents are unaware of
cyanobacteria and pond-related issues. The need to improve signage and public
education was emphasized. Committee members agreed there must be effective ways
to inform those unfamiliar with the ponds and related environmental concerns.
Need for Technical Expertise
The committee acknowledged a gap in technical expertise, particularly regarding
wetlands and environmental science. Suggestions were made to reach out to local
experts, or to institutions like Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). It was
proposed to request assistance from the Town Manager’s office to advertise for a
technical expert in local papers or official postings.
ADJOURNMENT
Motion made my Linda Farricy to adjourn the meeting at 7:45pm.
6
