Town of Mashpee Conservation Commission
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, MA 02649
presence of shallow surface water is beneficial. The persistent open-water areas are providing high-quality habitat
and feeding opportunities for waterfowl and other wildlife, which is considered a positive outcome even if it does
not precisely match the modeled wetland mosaic at this stage.
The Town recently received additional state funding to support supplemental plantings in mid-water and deeper
marsh zones within the restored bog. These plantings will be installed in the coming season, and staff will monitor
how they take hold as hydrology continues to shift. He reiterated that the project remains a successful restoration,
even if the current conditions differ somewhat from what had been predicted for this point in time, and emphasized
that the site may still evolve toward the expected mosaic over a longer period. He invited any commissioners who
are interested to contact him for a guided site visit, noting that a new interpretive sign has been installed and that the
project offers an excellent example of large-scale wetland restoration in progress.
• Local Comprehensive Plan
Mr. McManus informed the Commission that Town Planner Brian Tobin has circulated a draft of the Town's
updated Local Comprehensive Plan(LCP)for review. The document is substantial—approximately 200 pages—and
is currently in its preliminary draft stage. Commissioners who wish to read the draft may request a copy, and staff
will forward it for individual review. Further opportunities for input will be available as the LCP process continues.
• Herring Warden
o Agent described the conditions of each herring run in town and how the recent drought
status has impacted each one
• Harbor Management Committee
o Agent informed commissioners that the Harbor Management Plan has gone through
public review and input and will be evaluated at the state level next
• Mashpee River Restoration
o Agent described the progress of Upper Mashpee River restoration proposal, including
review of 25%level design plans. Questions remain on the status of Mill Pond as it
relates to this restoration initiative.
• Santuit Pond Fish Ladder—NRCS
o Permit level plans being finalized for a secondary"nature-like" fishway to be added to
this site.
• Guided Nature Tours—December Schedule
o Schedule—FYI to the commissioners
• Tribal Co-Management Focus Group
o No new updates
• Poppy Spit dredging
o Agent forwarded updates on the status of the Poppy Spit dredge project to all the
commissioners from the Mashpee Director of Natural Resources (Robert Tomaino)
• Communication/Correspondence: (Public Comment solicited for each update):
o None
• Additional Topics:
(This spaee is reserved for topics that the Chairman did not reasonably anticipate would be discussed).
No Additional Topics raised
10
