Town of Mashpee Sewer Commission
t
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, MA 02649
Chair Harris responded that the meetings are posted online and on the bulletin board inside
Town Hall. Ms. Bigham questioned why bleach cannot go into the sewer system. Wastewater
Superintendent Meader responded that it is a biological treatment process. Commissioner
Lyons commented that bleach is one of the things that disrupts the sewer system. He explained
that a few ounces of bleach used to clean the toilet are diluted when flushed with gallon of
water but if one were to pour a whole gallon (or more) of bleach into the toilet, it would
damage the sewer treatment process as it depends on bugs growing in the tanks to eat the
solids and break things down. The bleach would kill the bugs.
Chair Harris and Wastewater Superintendent Meader offered to speak with Ms. Bigham after
the scheduled meeting to address her questions.
Old Business
• Review and approval of Sole Sourcing with Marc Drainville from GHD
Mr. Drainville read an excerpt from MGL Chapter 30-39m (b)
(Powerpoint)
Specifications....shall be written to provide for full competition for each item of material
to be furnished under the contract; except, however, that said specifications may be
otherwise written for sound reasons in the public interest stated in writing in the public
records of the awarding authority or promptly given in writing by the awarding authority
to anyone making a written request therefor, in either instance such writing to be
prepared after reasonable investigation.
The letter is documentation for not providing three (3) names or equal and is being done in
accordance with the excerpt from Mass General Law.
