The Ace Hardware initially had their trucks back in, when they did so the cab sticks
out blocking both lanes, so nobody could come enter or exit the plaza. Currently, where they
come up the side, at least cars can maneuver around. She uses public transit. She would
rather see a shelter at the Deer Crossing location, there is already a sign, and already been
programmed to wait where the sign is by Eastern Bank.
Kathy Jacobsen- She is undecided. She loves Trader Joes and hates traveling to Hyannis to
shop there. Her main concern is traffic in the summer. She doesn't understand the right turn
only provisions.
Ms. Waygan had a question about the contract. She would like to know how this would affect
the Hyannis store, and is there a plan to close that branch? Mr. Morris stated there is no
intention of closing Hyannis. He will follow up on the data.
The Traffic Engineer for the project will be prepared to elaborate further with the slideshow
presentation during the special traffic meeting.
Brett Mitchell- He lives on Shellback Way and has lived here for 9 years. He walks the
sidewalks every day in his community neighborhood. The woman from the yarn store noted the
accident on Dec. 5t", but it seems to happen once every couple of months. One of the reasons
for that is there are people trying to take a left to go to Roche Bros or Marshalls, and that is an
area with very defensive driving. Now that plaza is adding a Chipotle. With the new right turn
curb cut on Rt. 28, cars traveling down that right lane, say a child and mother are in the
crosswalk, you are going to have dead stopped cars on Rt. 28. Everyone leaving on Shellback
and accidentally taking a right, that is a no exit road and is our private community. We will have
people driving in circles and turning around constantly while we are with kids or pets, out
walking or biking. USA Today noted Mashpee as one of the greatest small towns in the
Northeast. He is opposed to a Trader Joes in this location, or any store of the like. Mashpee
Commons is the heart of Mashpee; it will have a serious negative impact on the safety of
anyone traveling up and down Rt. 28.
Annie Taber- She has lived on Shellback Way for a while. She wanted to note the number of
near misses that occur, aside from crashes. People speed up and cut through the Ace
Hardware. She has attended every one of these meetings and has asked numerous times,
how is the developer considering the tenants and taking care of their back yards? There are
some really big trees coming down. If that hill starts washing away, her house could be in
jeopardy. She lived through this same procedure years ago, and that cut on Rt. 28 was
declined by massDOT. She loves Trader Joes, and is not opposed to having it closer, she is
opposed to it being built in her backyard, with many added cars and trucks, inhibiting safety.
There is no consideration for those that reside backed up to the store.
9
