Freshwater Ponds Committee
January 20,206

herring run, video monitoring will be implemented, while manual counts will continue for
comparison purposes.
Proposed Quashnet Valley Subdivision
A proposal for 24 additional single-family units is under MEPA review. The original permit
for the development was approved in 1976, with 62 existing house lots previously reviewed
between 2015 and 2017. There are currently 17 homes constructed; the new proposal
would add 24 more. The area is designated box turtle habitat, requiring MEPA review for
land “takings,” with a mitigation ratio of 1.5 acres into protection for every acre impacted.
The submission deadline is January 22 at noon, with materials available through the
Environmental Monitor. The project is not proposed to connect to town wastewater
service.
Dan Kent recommended that the committee consider submitting comments encouraging a
cluster system or connection to an existing wastewater facility to reduce nitrogen loading,
noting that the area drains into Waquoit Bay. Questions were raised about management
and capacity if a cluster system were pursued. Several members expressed concern that
the matter may fall outside the committee’s mission or watershed focus. The consensus
was that members may comment individually rather than on behalf of the committee.
Select Board Chair Michaela Wyman-Colombo noted that, due to time constraints, the
Select Board will not be submitting a letter as a board; however, some individual members
may submit comments independently.
Subgroup Updates
Mashpee Ponds Inventory
Irene Checkovich and Linda Farricy provided an update on the Pond Profile initiative. The
goal is to capture comprehensive information on each pond, drawing inspiration from
resources such as the Brewster Pond Guide. Using the Mashpee Environmental Coalition
4
