IMBO
w Afforda6Ce Housing Committee
16 Great Neck RoadJVorth
Mashyee, M-A 0264.9
Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod has the lowest HERS (home energy rating), and they work
hard to build high energy efficient homes of the utmost quality. A shed is added to all
properties.
Every other year the association donates a home, and they build it in 5 days, called a Blitz
Build. This September their Blitz Build will be in Falmouth off Gifford Street Extension behind
the ReStore.
Sharron Morais, a Habitat homeowner living in East Falmouth, came this evening to provide
her testimony. She has a 3-bedroom house that is part of a larger 10 home Habitat
development across multiple phases. She applied for the lottery in 2021, when she was living
in a 750s.f. apartment with her two kids and living off mattresses on her brother's floor. Her
kids were 11 and 14 and were getting to the point where they wanted their own rooms. She
would apply for apartments and be turned down. After driving by Mendes Way in Mashpee
multiple times, she looked into the Habitat program and submit her application by the deadline.
She wasn't sure she could do it. She longed to be able to grow vegetables in her own yard in a
safe neighborhood and no longer have to search for a safe affordable place to live. She spent
summers vacationing at Sea Mist, so living on Cape was a dream. Over the course of several
phone calls and Zooms, along with much paperwork, on August 5, 2021, 5 months later, she
got a phone call saying she needed to come sign one last document. When she showed up to
the office, she was greeted and congratulated. She was handed a new homeowner binder and
through tears was trying to figure out what was happening. She used to draw a picture of what
her dream house would look like. Avery similar floorplan to her dream home was in that binder,
a vision of what she had been drawing and dreaming of. There are many days throughout this
process that she will never forget, like December 4t"wall raising day, the day of the windy
dedication, then the day she received her keys, and signed papers. This incredible team of
devoted volunteers showed her what was possible. She moved for the last time, and now her
daughter has her own room, and Ms. Morais has her veggie garden in the backyard. Habitat is
more than building affordable homes, its educating new buyers, teaching skills, embracing
community, creating stability, and using energy efficient products in houses that become a
family's forever home.
Ms. Cullinan stated the end product is the family not the house, taking them on this journey
and educating them, then seeing their lives change.
Estimated monthly mortgage with the banks they use:
2BR: $233,400-$285,500 @ $1,550-$1,875 monthly payments
3BR $262,600 —$320,250 @ $1,750-$2,100 monthly payments
5
