Town of Mashpee Conservation Commission
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, MA 02649
The Commission discussed previous alum treatments conducted in Mashpee and elsewhere on Cape Cod.
Conservation staff noted that similar treatments had been successfully implemented in other ponds and that
lessons learned from earlier projects had improved treatment methods and monitoring protocols.
During public comment, Bonnie Gatley, 34 Cranberry Lane, inquired about potential restrictions on
boating, kayaking, swimming, fishing, pet use, and other recreational activities during the treatment period.
Mr. Ladewig explained that temporary restrictions may be necessary during active treatment operations for
safety purposes, but that there would be no long-term restrictions on recreational use once treatment
activities were completed. He further stated that treatment schedules and any temporary restrictions would
be publicly posted. Ms. Gatley also inquired about enforcement of existing boating restrictions on the pond
and was advised to contact the Harbormaster's Office regarding any concerns.
During additional public comment, Cynthia Koss, 59 Forest Drive, inquired about recently posted notices
around the pond and whether they were related to the proposed alum treatment. It was explained that the
notices pertained to a separate aquatic invasive species treatment for milfoil, fanwort, and nuisance elodea
and that the treatment posed no public health or pet safety concerns.
The Commission discussed the importance of providing adequate public notification regarding treatment
schedules, monitoring activities, and any temporary restrictions. Conservation staff indicated that
coordination with the Town's Water Quality Coordinator could assist with public outreach and notification
efforts.
There was no further public comment.
MOTION: To close an issue for 117 Timberlane Drive - Santuit Pond with the following
conditions:
1. The project shall comply with all recommendations contained in the Division
of Marine Fisheries comment letter.
2. Prior to each treatment event, the treatment schedule shall be publicly posted.
3. Any temporary closures or restrictions associated with the treatment activities
shall be publicly posted in advance of the treatment.
Motion by: Richard Sahl Seconded bv: Sandi Godfrey
Vote: Motion passed unanimously by roll call vote.
Steve Cook, Sandi Godfrey Richard Sahl, Seana Pitt
NOI 112 Old Brickyard Road, Deidre O'Callaghan & Martin Druffner.
