IMP. IMBO
d"frk,{ynr,fw VhP.
w Mashpee lncCusion and-Diversity Committee
16 Great Neck RoadNorth
Msshyee, M_A 0264.9
These barriers add unnecessary stress during a time of grief and may prevent families
from honoring their religious traditions in a timely and dignified way.
A dedicated section within the Mashpee Town Cemetery would provide a
compassionate, local, and practical solution. It would allow Muslim residents to be
buried in accordance with their faith, in the community they have helped build.
Why This Proposal Makes Sense
Precedent Exists Many towns and cities across the U.S.—including Cambridge, MA;
New Haven, CT, and communities in Michigan and Minnesota—have already designated
cemetery sections for Muslim burials and other faith-based burial needs.
Supports Religious Accommodation Islamic burial practices are unique. A designated
section allows the town to accommodate these needs without disrupting broader
cemetery operations or norms.
Planning for the Future Proactively addressing diverse burial needs now avoids greater
logistical and financial challenges in the future.
Enhances Community Inclusion This is not about special treatment—it is about
equitable access. By offering a dedicated space, the town affirms that Muslim residents
are a valued and integral part of the Mashpee community.
Estimated Costs and Logistics
• No additional staffing required; existing cemetery management remains in
place
• Burial practices comply with local health and safety regulations
• Modest signage or boundary markers may be added
• Community volunteers or local organizations may assist with outreach and
coordination
Suggested Timeline
• October: Committee review and vote
7
