Town of Mashpee Conservation Commission
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, MA 02649
• Santuit Pond Fish Ladder—NRCS
An update was provided on the Santuit Pond Fish Ladder improvement project. The Natural Resources
Conservation Service (NRCS), in partnership with the Cape Cod Conservation District, is designing
modifications to the existing fish ladder to improve fish passage.
The current fish ladder does not effectively pass herring, resulting in large numbers of fish accumulating
below the structure during migration. The proposed improvements are intended to address those deficiencies
while maintaining the existing fish ladder.
Survey work has been completed, and preparation of the final plans is nearing completion. Construction will
be subject to the seasonal environmental restrictions contained in the existing permit and, if all approvals
proceed as anticipated, installation is expected to occur during the winter season.
The Commission was also advised that this project, along with several other large municipal restoration
projects, is expected to return for permitting later this summer and fall.
• Guided Nature Tours—July Schedule
The Commission acknowledged receipt of the July schedule for the guided nature tours. No additional discussion or
action was taken.
Communication/Correspondence: (Public Comment solicited for each update)
None discussed.
Additional Topics:
(Any topics not on the approved agenda must be voted on and placed on the next hearing or quarterly agenda).
The Chair announced the resignation of Associate Member Neal Larsson from the Conservation Commission due
to family and work commitments. The resignation letter has been forwarded to the Select Board.
The Chair also announced that Christine Furlich has expressed interest in serving on the Commission and plans to
attend the July 23 meeting as an observer. Staff reviewed the Select Board's appointment process, explaining that
Commissioners will complete interview evaluation forms following the meeting, which, together with the
applicant's letter of interest and background information, will be forwarded to the Select Board for consideration.
Commissioners briefly discussed whether the vacancy should be filled by an Associate Member or a full member.
Staff noted that no formal request had yet been made and indicated that a full-member appointment would be
recommended, while acknowledging that the appointment decision rests with the Select Board.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10
