BOARD OF SELECTMEN <br /> MINUTES - REGULAR SESSION <br /> MONDAY, MARCH 5, 1990 <br /> PRESENT: Selectmen Carter, Hanson, Jacobson, Lawrence, Executive <br /> Secretary Kevin Harrington, Administrative Assistant Joyce <br /> Mason <br /> GUESTS: Dr. DeMoura, Jim Connery, Maureen McKay, Paul Somerville, <br /> Kevin Kirrane, Mike Makunis and Board of Appeals Members, <br /> Tom Fudala, Judy Mills, Pat Coffey, Tony Ferragamo <br /> The meeting convened at 7 : 00 p.m. <br /> MINUTES <br /> Mr. Lawrence moved to accept the Regular and Executive Session <br /> minutes of .February 20, 1990. Mr. Carter seconded the- motion. All <br /> were in favor. <br /> APPOINTMENTS & HEARINGS <br /> 1 . SCHOOL COMMITTEE - BUDGET - Dr. DeMoura and members of the <br /> School Committee were present to discuss the impact of the <br /> Proposed reduced FY91 School Department budget. <br /> Dr . DeMoura stated that there would be eleven lay-offs , <br /> (none of which are teachers) . Eight, however, are teacher <br /> aides. Dr. DeMoura listed each area where services would <br /> be reduced or eliminated and the total savings for each as <br /> indicated in the School Committee' s memorandum of February <br /> 16, 1990. These reductions total $709,800. <br /> User fees will be initiated - for extra curricular <br /> activities a fee of $ 10. 00 is proposed, for school sports , <br /> a fee of $20. 00 for each child is proposed and for <br /> instrumental lessons a fee of $175. 00 is proposed (over and <br /> above the cost of the rental of the instrument) . <br /> Mr,. Connery, Chairman of the School Committee stated that <br /> the results of these cuts would be one teacher, in an over- <br /> crowded classroom, in a poorly maintained building, with no <br /> extra-curricular activities and that he felt that the <br /> children of the Town deserve more. <br />
