Personnel Board
Minutes of October 18, 1982 Page 2
• Dave Hardy asked if they would stand by for just one hour's pay?
Chief Priestly explained that over a long period of time they would make out better.
Curtis referred to a call that he heard recently whereby they referred to Lucy Erdman
as a dispatcher and asked why.
Chief Priestly could give no explanation for that; but mentioned that it is a bonus
for the Fire Department to have her as a dispatcher as well as doing the secretarial
work.
Caroline asked who would be on call?
Chief Priestly explained that it would be regular firefighters coming back on duty.
Dave asked how often would they get called?
Chief Priestly explained that his concern is man power at the scene as there would be
occasions where people might not come in; such as, holidays.
Curtis asked if he would hire a civilian off the street?
Chief Priestly stated that he has had some inquiries where there is an interest from
people who want dispatchers jobs. In the long range, police and fire will have a dis-
patch center.
• Dave asked if one dispatcher would handle both?
Chief Priestly replied "yes".
Caroline asked if it would be cheaper to change the telephone system?
. The executive secretary replied "no",.
Curtis mentioned that upon looking over the job description, he could fill the job.
Chief Priestly mentioned that a person would have to have a third class telephone
license.
Curtis referred to the comment made by a firefighter that the department might need to
hire more men and asked the Chief if he agreed?
Chief Priestly replied that it would be a possibility.
Chief Frye said that he would like to see a part-time dispatcher in his department to
be paid at $4 per hour.
Dave asked if they were asking for a full-time dispatcher to be shared with the Fire
Department?
• Chief Frye replied eventually as there is not a telephone system right now.
Dave asked if it would be a problem in having a full-time dispatcher handling both the
Fire and Police stations?
Curtis commented that there could be two emergencies and that one person, in his opinion,
could not handle it.
