Youth Commission Page 2
Minutes
April 26, 1994
Dy-Laws: It was decided to contact Mr. Jeremy Carter, the former Chairman
of the Youth Commission and obtain the by-laws and any other pertinent
information that he may still have from the past meetings.
Youth 2000 Survev: The Youth Commission felt there was a need to review
the survey performed several years ago to see what recommendations had
come from the survey and perhaps incorporate some of the ideas and more
forward in developing future programs.
Youth Transportation: The Commission discussed the possibility of
purchasing a bus from Joseph DiMaggio, who will no longer be maintaining
the bus contract with the Mashpee School system. The Commission felt that
this issue was just as important as that of the Youth Center. If the Town
could purchase a bus then pick-up areas could be developed so that children
could participate in current programs that they are unable to join at the
moment because they do not have transportation. The Commission felt that
before this could go forward, perhaps there was a need to find out if this
something that would be supported by the residents of Mashpee. It was
agreed to set up a table at Town Meeting and get signatures from residents
who supported the puchase. The subject of raising money to purchase this
was then raised. A few ideas were discussed in an attempt to raise the
money (i.e. buying a spot to sign your name, possibility of sending a letter to
Paul Fireman regarding matching funds).
The Youth Transportation could have future possibilities, such as developing
Falmouth/ Mashpee/Hyannis Summer Youth Programs, utilizing the bus for
Leisure Service Programs thereby lowering the cost for different programs.
The bus could eventually become self-sufficient.
Summer Programs For Older Teens: The Commission discussed the
possibility of offering summer programs for the 11-14+ children, such as a
Youth Co-Op, a Youth business, and a program similar to the Boston Youth
program.
Having no further business to discuss, the was adjourned at 9:05 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Deborah F. Dami
Secretary
