• Dr. DeMoura asked the Committee to consider additional parking
because of the many activities going on at the building i .e.
parking near auditorium which may be used for Town Meeting.
Bob Mills said there will never be enough parking for town
meeting.
Dr. DeMoura presented information on academic programs. He
assumed the building initially is for 1 , 000 students. He also
assumed the students curriculum will revolve around english,
math, science and global studies. Administratively it will be
divided into 2 "houses" each with about 500 students. The
numbers will have to be worked out statistically with the
consultant. The Committee reviewed Dr. DeMoura's overview of the
academic program numbers.
There will be an applied arts program (metal , woodworking,
industrial tech. lab and business lab) however the high school
cannot duplicate the technical /vocational high school .
Mr. Jones asked what percentage of Mashpee students are
considered college preparatory? Dr. DeMoura thinks it would be
in excess of 50%.
Dr. DeMoura said there should be a music suite off of the
• auditorium. He suggested an auditorium for at least 500 people.
The Committee discussed the size of the auditorium. Should it be
large enough for the entire student body? There is a state re-
imbursement formula for the auditorium which will have to be
considered. Chairman Dinizio asked Gus Frederick to look at the
need/size of the auditorium. A large auditorium is expensive to
maintain , especially if it will only be needed 1 or 2 times per
year. Is there flexibility for enlarging the space? The
Committee will detail this problem to the architect.
The Educational Facilities Needs Committee recommended a core
facility for 1350 students with an initial capacity for 800
students. Dr. DeMoura recommends 1 ,000 students at first. Tom
Fudala also agrees 1 ,000 students makes more sense. This
Committee agrees with a core for 1350 students and initial
capacity for 1 ,000 students.
Dr. DeMoura stated the gymnasium is an important consideration.
He recommends a 4 station design, with a curtain or divider used
so that 4 groups can use it at the same time.
Mr. Jones stated many people today feel high school education
doesn ' t work very well . Does that have any effect on how you
configure this building, make space more flexible?
Dr. DeMoura responded it is his personal belief the future of
education is in greater utilization of technology and should look
• at designing the building for that. He would like to see 5 or 6
computers per classroom networked together, possibly hooked to
2
