• the library. A consultant will have to lay it all out.
The Committee added a library to Dr. DeMoura' s list.
The Committee discussed an on site child care center and its
value to the town and to the students. Who would run it and what
would its function be? Would it be open to the entire community?
It could be used as a teaching program for early childhood
education. Mr. Frederick explained the Sandwich child care
center is very profitable for their community school .
The Committee discussed the need for the principal of the school
to come on board early . After approval of the building at fall
town meeting the duties of this committee will increase
dramatically. Dr. DeMoura stated once the facility is approved
the School Committee will advertise for a principal but it will
take at least 3-4 months. It was suggested a "principal " in the
consulting business my be hired to help with the design needs and
meet the timetable. Dr. DeMoura offered to provide information
to the Committee until the other person is hired but agreed that
a design consultant will be needed. The Committee wants a person
independent of the architect; someone working for this Committee.
The Superintendent's responsibility is to the school . This is
big job and a lot of hours are needed . They need professional
input, someone to layout ideas and meet with the school committee
• and superintendent's office.
Dr. DeMoura reminded the Committee he hopes to move his office to
this facility.
Gus Frederick presented his list of ideas to the Committee. He
is looking at the facility as more of a community center.
- Child Care Center- full day care program. Could provide
tutoring opportunities, gym, computers. The Sandwich program is
run b their community school and is profitable.
Y Y
- Teen Center - meeting need of the whole community.
- Competitive size swimming pool-he presented article regarding
pools of the future. The pool has to be put in right. If there
is not enough money for it now, it should be in the architectural
design so there is a place for it in the future.
Mr. Martiros suggested doing a survey to see how many people are
interested in a pool . Mr. Polsi stated today it is foolish not
to have a pool . If it is presented right, using facts and
figures, people will go for it. Mr. Greelish stressed the need
for a therapeutic pool . He agreed a poll would be beneficial .
The Sandwich Community pool is profitable.
- Gymnasium(s)- his suggestion is similar to Dr. DeMoura' s to get
a multi-purpose use at the same time. May consider a moveable
wall to create 2 separate gyms.
- weight room - training room for the teams.
. - Ball Fields - it is very difficult for children to play ball in
this town because of the limited availability. The same if true
3
L
