I_ `p
• this project with luxury items. They will give the architect the
requirements and they can work out an appropriate design . Dr.
DeMoura would like 4 stations, Leisure Services, 2 full size gyms
with a dividing wall .
- Weight Room - whatever the physical eduction program requires
of a high school . Should not be a full fitness center competing
with local businesses.
- Ballfields - fit as many as we can in the space we have. If
necessary they can be designed but built in the future.
- Indoor Track - is very expensive. Will not include it.
- Tennis Courts - included.
- Theater arts center/Auditorium - Committee agreed it is a joint
use with the auditorium. This Committee will not assume the
proposed arts center in town will be built or available for
school use.
The Committee discussed the size of the auditorium. Should it
handle town meeting? The gym can handle an extremely large town
meeting. These days remote control can bring the meeting into
other rooms. The Committee agreed to an auditorium of between
500-700 people but will research State re-imbursement policies.
(Steve Greelish joined the meeting at 4:40)
-Library. The Committee decided it should be sufficient to serve
the high school but with public access. Interaction between high
school students and public is not a problem with the School
• Committee.
Bill Jones noted two libraries may have a purpose, one being a
quieter, more traditional library, a place to sit and read a book
or newspaper while the high school one will incorporate the
newest technology.
-Drivers Education Course- a laid out course is not necessary.
-Planetarium - Mr. Polito asked the committee to give this
serious thought. Most Committee members thought town meeting
will never approve it. The Committee will consider a small
observatory.
Ms. Ahlgren made a motion to forward the list agreed upon today
(7/20/93 meeting) to the architects with the understanding they
will be designing a building with a total capacity for 1350
students with an initial capacity for 1 ,000 and show how the
addition will go on for the additional 350 students and
incorporating Leisure Service's list and see what the impact of
the Planetarium will be. Ms. Mills seconded the motion. All
Committee members were in favor.
MEETING WITH DRA - ARCHITECTS
Carl Franceschi and Gary Larson were present representing DRA.
CONTRACT -Mr. Franceschi explained there are some minor
adjustments to be made and it should be back to town counsel by
• tomorrow.
2
