• GZA does have concerns about the old dump site and adjacent
parcels. They are concerned about what it may mean in terms of
developing the site. The focus of their work will be there.
The Committee discussed the possibilities.
Mr. Franceschi stated there is the possibility to develop the
site without that parcel . They do have to report to DEP if they
find something and the town will have to begin to clean it up but
cleaning it up is positive for the town.
DRA recommends they do the test pits and find out the extent of
the problem. It may be benign , trash degraded over the years.
They can come to an understanding of the extent of the problem
and may be able to focus on a solution and spell that out. It is
in a key location for developing the property. That property
could be phased in if it were to take years to clean it up.
The Committee reviewed some of the schematic site plans with Gary
Larson.
The first schematic had a short driveway, with a separate turn
off for staff parking , separate turn off for buses and separate
turn off for guest parking . A pedestrian way ties in to the
playing fields. There is direct accessibility to the playing
fields from the building. It is however in the area over the old
dump. There are some sloping areas with a 30 foot difference in
grade.
• DRA will have the useable acreage of the site for the Committee
next week. These are diagrams to get the Committees reactions.
There is parking for 500 cars .
Mr. Dinizio stated the worst case scenario, the most conservative
person would try to avoid the old dump site because of the
limited amount of information you can gather.
It could slow down the project and add the expense of cleaning it
up .
Bill Jones thought the possibility that site is "very hot" is
small .
Tom stated the approved sewage treatment plant is on the lower
end of the site.
Mr. Larson explained the relationship of the fields, parking and
building is more important to a high school than an elementary .
The lower portion of the site starts to fracture the fields and
parking , the fields are a distance form the school .
Mr. Franceschi explained one of the problems is the old "road"
which divides the site into 2 distinct pieces.
Ms. Ahlgren stated we need to see how this will work on the
• southern portion of the site.
3
