y
Mike Kirwin explained that CIC is about 95%complete. All work stations are in place, all but 2
printers are in place. All library stations do what Mr. Furfey expects them to do and she opened
the library today. (Her new printer stand is back ordered.)
The electronic mail package arrived yesterday and it is being put on the server now. CIC will
do their last check of each work station tomorrow and"lock it".
Training will start Monday. There will be four Mondays for training in Word, Excel,Electronic
mail. He will identify staff who are eager to learn more and they will hold a network
administrator type course.
Jim explained that CIC came to him because they are almost done here and are afraid they will
walk away and no one will know anything. After discussion it was decided to have a person
from Computers Without Fears (Kevin) assigned here 4, '/2 days to learn the system and deal
with issues that come up. The network administrator the school department has advertised for
will no be hired for another 4-6 weeks.
Paul asked the Committee to think about spending some money on computer training. His
concern is not that we are getting what we bought but do we know if its what we need. There
may be a shortfall. Do we have all he pieces to do all the application the staff here wants. Are
there plans to use all the technology we bought.
He would like the Committee to consider spending funds to have Kevin from CWOF spend a
few'/Z days at the school.
Merry Sue said the teachers need to learn what is there first, then have someone point them in
the direction of using it.
Paul said Kevin can help evaluate what is the right training for each staff person, based on their
experience and what there plans are to use the technology.
John Williams explained the person from the training company wanted to d a 4 hour training.
However, it will be divided into 3, 30 minutes sessions, with 15 people per session. At the end of
the 3 session,he can then assess where we are,he will see all staff in action.
Merry Sue said at the end of the 3 session, everyone will have heard the same things about our
system. There can then be specialized training, which different staff will go to. There needs to be
a common core of leaming with the initial training.
Paul said he wants Kevin to try to do some evaluation of the staff and to evaluate if the software
is really working the way we expected it to.
Dr. DeMoura said 90 minutes of training is really minimal for most employees. Computers
Without Fears could hold classes for 4 hours, with 10 people for$600 per hour.
Paul suggested holding additional training on Saturday, but do not make it mandatory. We can
offer several other session,to offer flexibility. He thinks we will find a good portion of the staff
will show up.
Peter asked if they have determined what level of competency they want from the staff?
John Williams said everyone should be able to log on and off the network, use windows 95, e-
mail, access the Internet, access the library through Winnebago and use the administrative
software to access their class.
