Leadership & Governance
Based upon a review of both qualitative and quantitative data, the following Major
Findings/Trends have emerged:
• The District Leadership Team is small (7 including myself) and is establishing
cohesion as a collaborative group focused on improving student achievement. The
focus of all Leadership Team meetings is the instructional core. For example, the
team recently has
commenced the process of
conducting weekly
Learning Walkthroughs in
all four schools as a means 'What Mrs. DeBoer has
to develop common done with the Quashnet
language and blog is amazing! I love
understandings about
effective instructional all of the information
practice. that's posted on there!"
• Three of the four principals ' Quashnet parent
are first-term principals in
the district, however most
have many years of
experience in the district in different teaching and leadership roles. It is clear that
instructional leadership is critical.
• Administrator visibility and communication are important to staff and parents.
• The School Committee is a five-member team consisting of two MPSD parents and
three community members with broad agendas focused on improving outcomes for
all students. They are bright, motivated individuals who are working to improve
community outreach. In recent years they have dealt with volatile budget
situations. This set of circumstances has led to divisiveness within the community
and the School Committee has suffered criticism from both supporters and
detractors of the school district Many parents and community members
acknowledge their acumen and functionality as a group as well as their willingness
to roll up their sleeves and help where needed.
• Town officials (Board of Selectmen, Finance Committee Members, and Town
Manager) are supportive of the school district However, past budget difficulties
have created tension between the town and the MPSD. Our school community, to
some parents and community members have been pitted against each other and this
has led to additional divisiveness and lack of collaboration. The current School
Committee has recently addressed this (since August 2013) by establishing"Multi-
Board Meetings."with the town's Board of Selectmen, Finance Committees, town
6
