Teaching and Learning in the MPSD <br /> Based upon a review of both qualitative and quantitative data,the following Major <br /> Findings/Trends have emerged: <br /> • Parents and staff agree that the level of rigor at the Mashpee Public Schools needs to <br /> increase considerably. There is a disproportionately high number of NEHS and <br /> NJHS inductees relative to MCAS proficiency and many elementary parents criticize <br /> awards programs where "everyone gets a <br /> trophy". Grade inflation causes problems <br /> across the district and many Mashpee High <br /> School seniors are disappointed that after "We are excited to move <br /> earning high honors throughout their forward...we need helpful <br /> schooling score poorly on SATs and college feedback from administration <br /> acceptances. and professional development <br /> that will enhance our <br /> • Classroom observations show the use of a instruction. That's the only way <br /> variety of instruction strategies, as both we'll get better." <br /> student-centered and teacher-centered -Mashpee teacher <br /> approaches are used. Many teachers are <br /> very skilled at their craft,however, teaching <br /> as facilitation is not the predominant <br /> methodology. Likewise,learning <br /> opportunities are not frequently centered around project-based learning or <br /> essential questions. Tier two, stand and deliver instruction are the norm in most <br /> classes. <br /> • Regular and ongoing peer feedback with regard to instructional practices is not an <br /> active part of the district culture. At best it happens informally, not through any <br /> formal structures or protocols. There are instances of groups of teachers working <br /> with a team approach toward curriculum and assessment. <br /> • Professional staff report that they want clearer and more frequent feedback from <br /> their principals on how to improve their practices,however are ambivalent about <br /> the new Massachusetts Educator Evaluator Regulations. <br /> • The Massachusetts DART tool (District Analysis &Review Tool) show mixed results <br /> compared to comparable districts (based on grade span, enrollment, and special <br /> populations). Mashpee's proficient and advanced percentages are above <br /> comparable districts' levels in both Math and ELA(Math 53%,vs.comp. dist. 50% <br /> and ELA 68%,vs. comp. dist. 62%). <br /> • All three testing schools missed DESE targets for either the aggregate or subgroups <br /> in 2013. Therefore, the Quashnet School and Mashpee High School have been <br /> 8 <br />
