Sw
orientation programs, etc.
C. Mentor program. Ms. Mills discussed the possibility of
developing a mentoring program (people in school system) .
They also call this program advisor/advisee. The guidance
department would run this program. Sometimes the child
cannot go to a teacher or a parent to talk. Itallows
another person, within the school system, to act as a.
positive role model .
d. Random Acts of Kindness/Student of the Week. Recognize
students that display caring for each other/things that kids
do that are positive. Mr. Feldman feels that teachers must
buy into it . The importance is to recognize kids doing the
right thing. We must encourage positive behavior with the
kids .
e. Recognition of Teachers/staff that goes the extra mile.
Positive reinforcement for the teachers and staff is great .
Occasionally the principal receives a commendatory letter
about a teacher/staff member.
f. After school academic programs . Mr. Feldman discussed
the issue with Mr. Fredericks from Leisure Services on how
to develop or improve the after school programs.
(1) One possibility would be for teachers to mentor
volunteers developing programs. Teachers would receive
a consultant stipend to help in developing a program
that would integrate with the school curriculum.
Teachers would then mentor the program while the
volunteer would conduct the program.
(2) Improve communications between Leisure Services
and after school program personnel and School staff.
We need to find out what each group needs/has to offer.
The group discussed some concerns raised by the Council
on the way programs are developed. Ms. Dunivan
suggested the Council send a letter to Leisure Services
of the concerns raised during the discussion. We must
clearly state roles of the different parties (number of
children, times, responsible party for program, clean
up, etc. ) .
(3) Gifted and talented children programs.
5. Election of Secretary and Co-chair - Joy Blackwood
unanimously selected as Co-chair of the council . Kathy
3
