2010-2011 Quashnet School Council RukA_
Minutes CQP7111
Meeting: Thursday, February 3, 2011-3:15 PM to 4:45 PM
Quashnet School Conference Room
Present: Patricia DeBoer (Principal), Cary Marshall (Teacher), Maria Cortez (Parent),
Barbara Cotton (Parent), Jackie Rastallis (Teacher)
Absent: Jane Dolan (Parent), Jack Phelan (Community Member)
Our four major areas of responsibility:
1. Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies
and statewide student performance standards
2. Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school
3. Reviewing the annual school building budget
4. Formulating a school improvement plan
List of Documents for 2/3/11 School Council Meeting:
1. FY12 School Maintenance Budget Proposal
2. PowerPoint print out—Superintendent Bradshaw's further explanation of FY12 Budget
3. National Elementary Honor Society—Website information handout
Agenda/Minutes
1. Superintendent Ann Bradshaw—FY12 School Budget
Mrs. Bradshaw attended our School council meeting to provide an overview of the FY12
School Maintenance Budget Proposal. The School Committee voted on 2/2/11 to support the
current bottom-line amount of$18,887,708. Mrs. Bradshaw discussed the variables: Special
Education Transportation, Grants, and Prepays. She also hopes to be able to fund the Math
Coach position for one more year and recognizes that we will need to add another third grade
teacher. Trade-offs will have to be made in order to find the funds for these two positions.
Mrs. Bradshaw shared that she is feeling optimistic about the FY12 budget and the budget
process.
2. Friends of Mashpee Public Schools—Update/Sharing—Barbara Cotton
Barbara Cotton shared that she attended the most recent FINCOM meeting. While at the
meeting she made the suggestion of a mediator being hired to help mend the professional
relationship between the school's leadership team and the town's leaders. Barbara said that
distrust exists from the town's side, particularly in the area of prepays. I shared that often it is
more cost effective to order materials in early spring that will be used in the following school
year. When it comes to the personnel side of the budget, it is an imperfect science because
one can never anticipate all the changes that might positively or negatively impact the budget.
It is important that all information that is shared with the public be accurate and not distorted
to alter public opinion.
