3. "Mashpee Cares"—A community-wide effort to develop a plan to address social issues involving Mashpee
youth and their families. There are a number of areas that need our attention including bullying, drug abuse,
suicide prevention, gang activity, and helping young people learn how to manage the stresses in their lives. These
issues are bigger than the schools and a coalition of adults representing health organizations, law enforcement,
advocacy, and the business community is needed to work together to support the young people of Mashpee.
Next Meeting: Thursday, February 3, 2011 (tonight) at 6:00 PM (Quashnet, Room 139)
4. Curriculum Planning—SY11-12 (Feedback on SY10-11)
Teachers and parents like this year's Focused Reading Block (FRB). We will continue
this for next year—making improvements in instructional strategies and data collection.
6-Day Specials Schedule—Somewhat challenging for families to keep track. This
schedule was put in place this year to facilitate all teachers on a grade-level having a
common prep and also to work around the schedules of librarian Diane Kingsley and
music teacher Danielle Ripa. Both of these individuals spend half of every day at KCC
and the other half at Quashnet. We will probably continue with this schedule for next
year. However, 7 third grade homerooms could present a challenge.
We will explore whether a study skills class could be offered next year—either during
the week as a special or one day per week after school.
5. Other i
Read Across America—March 2, 2011: Council parents were invited to participate.
National Elementary Honor Society—Council members received a brief overview of this
organization. All Council members were positive/supportive of our further exploring
bringing a NEHS chapter to Quashnet beginning in the 11-12 school year. Council
members were encouraged to further explore the organization's website. Quashnet
staff input will also be gathered.
Postponed to the next School Council meeting:
Transitioning: 2nd to 3`d; 6`h to 7th
Review of current parent/student handbook (start process)—planning for SY 11-12
Meeting adjourned at 4:30 PM
Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 3, 2011.
(Quashnet School Conference Room)
