Submitted by the Board of Health
Explanation: In 1993 D.E.P. classified unlined, municipal landfills into four categories based
on available information. The four categories are Significant Threat, Potential Threat, No
Present Threat and Inconclusive Data. The Mashpee landfill originally was categorized as a
significant threat, however, after providing D.E.P. with additional information, the landfill was
reclassified as a Potential Threat. The D.E.P. initiated negotiations with Mashpee to arrange a
landfill closure schedule, as a result, the Town was able to extend the life of the landfill to 1998.
However, the D.E.P. requires that the engineering work associated with the closure be completed
in advance.
Recommendation: The Finance Committee recommends approval.
Motion made by Selectman Caffyn.
