3 <br /> Board of Selectmen <br /> Minutes <br /> Monday, July 10, 2000 <br /> Vanasse Hangen Brustlin: (continued) <br /> Correspondence was received from the Planning Board on this date <br /> relative to the project proposal. The roundabout approach as proposed <br /> was unanimously deemed the most suitable plan developed by VHB for <br /> the reconstruction of the intersection by the Planning Board. <br /> It was noted that the signalized alternative is estimated to cost$200,000. <br /> The roundabout approach is estimated to cost $250,000. A matrix <br /> detailing the comparison of alternatives was distributed to the Selectmen <br /> for additional consideration. <br /> Selectman Leveille opened the discussion to obtain public comment of the <br /> Route 130/Great Neck Road North intersection project proposal. <br /> Richard Halpern suggested that signage be incorporated into the project <br /> layout to direct interested citizens to the area of Mashpee Commons. <br /> Heidi Trottier,the owner of Mashpee Auto Repair, and Chamber of <br /> Commerce member related opposition to the roundabout. She favored the <br /> traffic signal system in the matter of vehicle and pedestrian safety. <br /> Former Director of Public Works, Ernest Virgilio stated that although the <br /> signalized approach is the safest alternative, it in not in the interest of <br /> historic preservation in the Town of Mashpee. Mr. Virgilio then added <br /> that he is not pleased with any of the concepts as presented to date. <br /> Tom Fudala, the Town Planner supported the Planning Board's <br /> recommendation for a conventional roundabout. Representative Nancy <br /> Caffyn agreed, and noted that the roundabout would enhance the historic <br /> district. <br /> After a lengthy discussion, the Selectmen directed Vanasse Hangen <br /> Brustlin to develop additional alternatives and related support <br /> documentation for further consideration. Traffic flow and pedestrian <br /> safety was designated a priority. Additional concerns include the future <br /> Mashpee Art House, the driveway access from Dunkin Donuts, the <br /> Bayberry Country Store, the private residence driveway, the historic <br /> district,the existing burial sites, and the flow of traffic from the Town <br /> Hall facility. increased land use for the project proponent was suggested <br /> as well as utilizing a T-shaped design configuration. <br />
