v -5-
Mr. Hennigan: Yes, that was where the old system was.
Pauline: This has nothing to do with that. I am looking at something and Dorothy
just noticed also. You have a well here and on this house down here and there is a
well also?
George Benway: That is a well pump.
Mr. Hennigan: What we had to do and in some respects it is a good thing we had the
chance to do this because their existing well was very close to the old system. But
now we are going to have the 100 foot plus distances in both lots. I can't conceive
of any problems. We want your advise. We want your suggestions,
George Benway: 'I know the Stevenson's. They are friends of mine and are also related
to the Peterson's on the island. They are staying on the island. They know that with-
out fresh water from wells that it is no go. They want to do everything in accordance
with regulations that is prescribed. The people who are buying, the Sanchez's, I want
to make it very clear, they are buying from Ann Guytner (Mrs. Morse), who manages my
office. She has taken over for the last year and a half. I want to make that clear so
there is no misunderstanding. However, I know the Sanchez's and they also know they
have to live here and they have to depend on fresh water from a well system and they do
not want to contaminate not only the well system but, obviously, they do not want to
contaminate either side because that is going to reduce their property value along with
everyone else's. They are sincere and they are concerned. I am also concerned as an
abuttor in addition to those other connections because obviously whatever happens here
is going to affect my property on the island.
Pauline: It x111 raise or lower your value.
George Benway: Absolutely. My own house, obviously, and some property across the street.
I haven't read Courtemanche's letter recently. I know here that this is mean high water
and I know that the mussel beds are abutting this area here. There are no soft shell
clams and no cherry stones, it is so muddy. There might be some, but a very, very lox
production., Back here, this is marsh. No question about it. I have yet to find, myself,
any mussels or any shellfish back in this area. It is marsh, however. There is no ques-
-tion about it.-- -
Pauline: While we were there, the biologist from DEQE pulled up Ii,e mussel.
George Benway: -- I have never seen mussel out there. '- -
Mr. Hennigan: What I am trying to say is this: If the mussels are right up on £he road,
if the system is installed according to Title V, there is no -problem. Both the Shellfish
Warden and the Board of Health have indicated that. And we already know that this house
has had an existing system and the samples taken out there have been below 40 and that is
one-tenth of 1 percent of the total DEQE standards. - -
1 ?_ -
Pauline: Any other questions?
George Benway: What is the
procedure now because I know Stevens are oin to b
g y p g g e calling
and a the rest M o
11 here do we stand.
