-3-
Mr. Nulty: Oh yes, well above it.
Barbara: Moon tide will hit it, won't it?
Mr. Nulty: A storm tide might of gotten close.
Wayne: It won't in the winter time. If you ever had a high tide that got in there
and it froze, I think you would then see what kind of damage that I am talking about.
I just think it is too fragile. There are relatively very few railroad tie walls that
are put in along the coast that Z had ever seen that are successful. They are just not
heavy enough. Everything else that we had got when you think about it is stone.
Barbara: What about the wall that was put in on the duck pond. He put in a railroad
tie wall and that is still there.
Charles: Those ties are vertical.
Wayne: Vertical ties go below the frost line. Tells about a sea wall which he is work-
ing on in Lake Waquoit where there is no tidal action. The wall has deadmen and is
anchored dorm but just came up.
Pauline: If you are using a railroad tie and you have your pipes down through and driven
in, they are just put in in a vertical position without a hook. There is nothing that
anchors it. Now say that you did put a hook or something, would that hold it?
Wayne: It needs two things. It needs the anchor at the bottom with weight. It would
have to be dug out and poured concrete put in there. That is impossible because of the
water.
Barbara: How difficult would that be for you to change that from horizontal to vertical?
Mr. Nulty: I could certainly speak to Mr. Rebello about this and reinforce that strongly.
I would certainly go along with that.
Barbara: It seems to be the answer.
Charles: I am looking on the other side of the crook and from my past experience with
bulkheads and this sort of thing, it has been the vertical presentation to the water side
which seems to last. Everything that I have seen horizontal just doesn't make it.
Wayne: The bad thing about a vertical tie wall is that it is hard to keep it together so
that it doesn't fall apart like loose teeth. So what Kenny will probably do is put 2 x 4's
in the interior part on a horizontal to hold these together. These are something like the
creosoted bulkheads that you have seen. You have seen piers that do down and use a 3 x 8
lumber and is put in horizontally. As long as it is put in deep enough, they usually work.
There are wooden structures but they are not railroad ties. Ice action on vertical ties
that are like vertical piers that are out in the water which get surrounded by ice crimps
around the ties and lifts them right up. Your advantage is the fact that you are building a
retaining wall up against this slope and the ice won't have the action on that one side.
I would say that this would work.
Mr. Nulty: I have a letter of support, if I may enter this into the proceedings, from one
of the abutters: Mr. Richard Gannon of 66 Bowsprit Point, New Seabury.
Barbara: I also got a phone call from Mr. Devereux who highly approved of this who is
his immediate abutter.
Mr. Nulty: I do like the fact that the deadmen have worked well before. I x111 go with
the vertical if you all say that is the best thing to do.
