Mashpee Council on Aging
26 Frank E. Hicks Drive
Mashpee, MA 02649
508.539.1440
Volunteer Assistant
March 2011
New Volunteers Interviewed
• Christine White— Friendly Visitor, Driver
• Diane Goeldner— Friendly Visiting, Office Projects
Drivers
Our"snow bird" drivers are starting to arrive back from Florida and we are getting
them back on our lists to call.
Training Opportunity
I attended the training on "Appealing to Experience: Getting Baby Boomers
Involved in Volunteering" put on by Cape Cod Volunteers. We are already seeing "baby
boomer" volunteers in our ranks. We presently have about 20 volunteers who were born
between 1946 and 1965. Our largest group is still the 70 —80 year olds. However, we
have people through out the age groups who represent the qualities typically thought of
as boomers.
What I took away from that workshop is that we have a great strength in the
sense of community here and that we need to be continuously open and flexible in the
face of the changing desires and needs of volunteers of all ages.
Attached is an interesting "Cohort Chart" that was part of the handouts.
Volunteer Advocate
We were privileged to have Monica Costa volunteer with us as part of her
Bachelor's in Nursing program. She is currently also a case manager with Overlook
VNA. Her job with us was to talk with newer volunteers to get some feedback about
their experience. Comments were generally very positive and we were able to identify a
couple of volunteers who wanted more work. This can be a productive way to get
feedback and we would like to continue this project in the future.
Volunteer Recognition
It's coming right up on May 26. Please remember that we are asking you to
arrive early, at 10:30 AM, to greet our guests as they come. We will again provide you
with "Reserved" signs that you can use to choose your desired seats.
Elder Services Agency Fair
On April 22, 2011 Jim and I attended the Elder Services Agency Fair. I met
many of their staff and distributed information about the Mashpee Senior Center and our
volunteer program.
Respectfully Submitted,
Judy Genge
Volunteer Assistant
