6
Community Preservation Committee
Minutes
November 1 b, 2017
Mashpee Historic District Commission Ava Costello Mash ee American Revolutionary War
Memorial: (continued)
Research has revealed 45 different names of Wampanoag's, comprised of 9 different regiments
who derived from the Town of Mashpee and have participated in the American Revolutionary
War. Of the 27 individuals, one returned to the Town of Mashpee. Research is ongoing to
determine what occurred during this time. It has been determined that 70 widows remained in
the Town of Mashpee. A total of 45 have been identified. Many of the soldiers may have been
whalers. The purpose of this research being conducted by Mr. DeSorgher, Ms. Costello and Mr.
Mills is to bring this history and the Native American community to the forefront.
Mr. DeSorgher has recently moved to Mashpee and his research experience in the Town of
Medfield in this area has greatly assisted in this endeavor. The Medfield project was proposed to
honor and recognize all Veterans of all wars with a story of the individuals who have served.
The war memorial park was similar to the Town of Mashpee. A star is depicted next to the name
of an individual who gave the ultimate sacrifice. The monuments have open spaces for those not
identified in the initial study.
In discussing his proposal it was noted the site has not been realized although it is thought the
location of the Community Park adjacent to the former Attaquin Hotel space near the woodland
area would be most suitable. Mr. Mills indicated the vision is to incorporate a natural, winding
needle path from the Community Park to this site for possible meditation, and to maintain
functionality. Native herbs and other plant material are being considered to conform to the rich
history of the Town of Mashpee. It would be ideal if the wooded area was cleared. Not just for
the monument, but for the pathway to the gardens.
Maintenance would be assumed by those caring for the Veterans Circle. Members of the CPC
suggested the HC and HDC meet with the DPW Director and Community Park Committee to
review the existing plan. It was also recommended the local Veterans Post be informed of this
objective. The CPC gave consideration to increasing the proposed budget to incorporate
additional funding for site clearing and other work associated to this historical project.
The HC and HDC members present were receptive of this suggestion. It is the intention of the
HDC to place historic markers, funding from a previous CPA authorization to further depict the
rich heritage of the Mashpee community to make this a better and more wonderful place to visit.
This project would also result in greater use of the Community Park.
