5
Community Preservation Committee
Minutes
December 13,2016
APPOINTMENTS AND HEARINGS
Friends of the Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge—Wildlife Refuge History (continued)
A proposed budget for the official history document was included in the project application.
Brian Kerl is planned to be editor and writer for the project, Glasstown Designs is the preferred
company for design and layout, and New Wave Printing would produce 1,000 booklets for the
$10,130 cost.
It was noted there has been other fundraising initiatives for the project proposal. The Friends has
contacted the Town of Falmouth Community Preservation Committee to see if there is interest in
collaborating for this project. The shared cost of the proposal would then be reduced in half.
To reduce the cost of the project the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Historical Archives
Department, and the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Reserve has contributed a total of$1,200.
Ms. Fox indicated this is a very unique piece of property, the second largest open space land on
the Cape, and largest within the Upper Cape. The land encompasses over 5,800 acres. The
Refuges are managed by the U.S. Fish& Wildlife Service and its Partners. All the entities work
collaboratively and in unison.
Ms. Fox in closing stated the story needs to be told for the benefit of the Town of Mashpee as
well as the Town of Falmouth. Twenty years has passed without any documentation of this
Refuge; and we are losing our ability to capture the story as the founders retire, move away or
pass. This type of project promotes interest and awareness. Letters of recommendation for the
project proposal include; the Town of Mashpee Planning Department, the Conservation
Commission, Historical Commission and the U.S. Division of Fish& Wildlife Service.
Friends of the Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge—Refuge Brochure &Trail Mas:
n
A$15,230 budget was presented to the CPC to fully fund the update of the Refuge brochure;
5,000 copies and Mashpee Trails Map Guide; 10,000 copies. It was explained the current
Refuge brochure is in need of updating and a Trail Map Guide is needed to update the trails for
safety purposes.
It was noted that safety has become an issue as many trails are not marked. Trail mapping is a
common theme of the Friends, and the number one priority for safety. Several different trail
mapping brochures are being reviewed to select the most user friendly and less cumbersome
pamphlet. The trail map guide and Refuge brochures are planned to be printed and disseminated
at kiosk site locations, at the Chamber of Commerce office, and at the Town Hall and Mashpee
Conservation Department.
