No comments from the public
Motion: Mr. Shaw moved a negative determination, seconded by Mr. McKay. Vote
unanimous. 6-0
6:03 Richard D. and Dorothy C. Sherman, 19 Amy Brown Road. Proposed
hardscape and landscape improvements and removal of hazardous trees.
Resource Areas: Land Under Ocean, Salt Marsh, Vegetated Bordering Wetland,
Coastal Bank and LSCSF
John O'Dea, Sullivan Engineering & Consulting, represented the applicants along with
Maria Hickey, Maria Hickey Landscapes. Mr. O'Dea explained the project is to improve
the landscape. The slope in the backyard is overly vegetated with invasives and non-
native growth. 7 trees will need to be removed and 3 of them were in such bad condition
that the Agent allowed them to be cut down to a certain level already. There are 3
retaining walls in the backyard that will be removed and one new landscape boulder wall
will be constructed ten feet off the deck. The goal is to create a level usable area. The
work will not have any negative impact on the coastal bank and will improve the habitat.
Maria Hickey explained the mitigation plan is to remove the invasive non-native ivy
which has enveloped the area and caused stress to the existing trees. They are
proposing to remove all the invasive ivy and the compromised trees and root structure.
She said the area will be replanted with native blueberry, clethra, and winterberry which
will add diversification of species where there is presently no native vegetation. Both lot
lines will be planted with juniperus chin to stabilize the hillside and offer nesting sites for
native birds. The.native landscape will provide wildlife habitat to attract songbirds,
butterflies and bees and also provide erosion control. She said they also are planning to
do phragmites control which may prevent the spread of the phragmites to adjacent
properties.
The Agent noted on the plan there was a pathway and stated if they want to have a
walkway, it should be an elevated walkway. He said that since it is not part of this
application he suggested the Commission dismiss the pathway and the applicant come
back with an Amended Order request, Mr. Sweet was concerned about the dead pine
tree at the end of the driveway which endangers his house and requested its removal.
The Agent noted whoever treats the phragmites has to be a Mass licensed applicator to
handle herbicides approved by the Dept. of Environmental Protection. The Commission
will need notice of who it is and a copy of their credentials.
No comments from the public
Motion: Mr. McKay moved to Close and Issue with the conditions the pathway is
not a permanent path and not being allowed at this point as part of this
application and that the removal of the pine tree at the end of the driveway be
included, seconded by Mr. Shaw.
