-2-
Board of Selectmen's minutes to the committee members. Bob commented that he
thought it worked out well.
Review School De artment's Policy re:_.FIandicgp Access to Mashpee Public Schools
In follow-up to previous discussion at the last meeting on handicap access to the Mashpee
Public Schools,Michele Brady handed out three school policies: Visitors to the Schools,
Non-Discrimination on the Basis of Handicap, and the Building and Grounds Policy.
The concern was how access is allowed into the schools when school is in session.
Charlie M. mentioned that under A.D.A. Regulations, Title II addresses access in
municipal buildings which includes schools. The regulations are relative to accessibility;
not security.
Bob W. noted that the school policies were promulgated prior to things becoming an
issue. He noted that the automatic doors were installed in 2006.
Bob W. wondered how a person coming up to the school at 9:30 a.m. in a wheelchair gets
in. Michele commented that there is a door bell and a person can hit the button to gain
access. Some discussion centered on the Quashnet School entrance and the Coombs
School entrance (noting that the secretary is located off to the side of the entrance door).
Michele B. said that she would talk to the Superintendent and asked for a copy of Title II.
Bob said that he would send her a booklet and suggested that she could view the ADA
website. Charlie said that it is also under Mass.gov under the Department of Public
Safety tab and then under Architectural Access Board. Bob will send this link as well.
E-Mail re: Archives Project
Bob W. made reference to an e-mail that he received from Catherine Laurent, D.P.W.
Director. She wants the committee to be aware that the town will be renovating the
Archives building this year. One of the main improvements will be to make it accessible.
She will forward preliminary design plans to the committee as soon as they are available
for comment.
Charlie M. commented that commercial projects have to go through a review process.
Committee members wondered where the money may come from for this project. It was
thought that it could come from community preservation.
It was also noted that Catherine Laurent will be attending the March 80'meeting to go
over plans for the ramp's grand opening.
