-3-
Identify Issues of Concern to the School Department's Special Needs Pro ams
Bob W. commented that we rarely delve into special needs students in relation to ADA.
He asked the committee members for suggestions or to identify potential areas that we
might look into for the whole school experience; such as, the restrooms, cafeteria tables,
etc.
Michele Brady commented that there is a student in a wheelchair at the K.C.C. school
and there are a few students at the Middle School and no one at the Quashnet.
Bob W. said that it would also apply to students who are vision impaired, hearing
impaired, etc.
Michele Brady said that they are required by law to meet standards (i.e. for the hearing
impaired, they would purchase any equipment needed; such as an amplification device).
The school is currently doing an assessment on where the equipment is. She commented
that the staff is good about trying different things before purchasing the items (i.e. a
walker is on loan). They are trying creative things. There are books on tape for kids with
learning disabilities. She said that she is not aware of any major issues.
Bob W. mentioned that there are resources out there; such as, The Audible Local Ledger
for the reading impaired which has the technology to read books in different formats,
warrants for town meeting, etc. Beverly W. commented with the local ledger, you have
to have the radio. Bob said that there is a recording system flash drive or CD which
plugs into any computer. Carol Sherman asked if it goes on the Town's web site?
Kathleen Moore said that it is just the audio portion.
Discussion of Plans for Installation of Beach Access Ram —South Cape Beach
Bob W. said that the access ramp is at the D.P.W. and is ready to be installed. The rough
plan is to have a dry run to make sure that the grading is right. He asked the committee
members to think about how they want to introduce this for the"kick off' event.
Some suggestions were:
Catherine Laurent will come to the March meeting.
Contact Brian Kerhl from The Enterprise.
Touch base with Gus Frederick and Heidi McLaughlin from Recreation to check on
dates.
Carol Sherman will announce it at the Selectmen's meeting and the date and she will also
announce it to the Chamber of Commerce.
