Human Rights Club
Ms. Farren announced that Effie Purdy, advisor to the high school's Human Rights Club, has
invited the Affirmative Action Committee to join the club in a joint activity in January. Ms.
Vaughn noted that the activity will occur during the week of January 24 during mid-term week.
Ms. Vaughn reported that mid-terms will occur in the morning and a variety of activities will be
available each day in the afternoon. The program is called Winter Week and is designed to
encourage kids to stay in school. The event is an extension of last year's MILK Breakfast.
Among the ideas that have been discussed include a multi-cultural lunch, a dance and/or an art
and poetry festival. Ms. Farren stated that approximately 20 kids, grades 9-12, are involved in
the group. Ms. Farren has been attending the meetings and the next meeting will take place on
December 1 at 2 p.m. It was recommended that students be invited to attend future Affirmative
Action meetings which Ms. Farren has discussed with Ms. Purdy.
Special Olympics
Ms. Vaughn announced that the Special Olympics has been scheduled for May 20, 2011. Ms.
Farren expressed interest in helping again this year. Ms. Vaughn reported that over 600 people
attended last year's event and that invitations have been sent for this year's event and 15 schools
plan to attend, along with 10 new schools who wish to attend. Ms. Vaughn noted that the seniors
who have been involved with the event will be assisting with the training of juniors, sophomores
and freshmen. Ms. Vaughn reported that 89 student volunteers attended the first organizational
meeting in October. Members of the Peer Leadership Group in the 7th and Stn grade will also be
assisting with the event. Ms. Vaughn encourages the students to each identify a $50 sponsor,
which raised $5000 for last year's event, and students have been very responsive to committing
to raising the fiends through babysitting or gifts from grandparents. More details will be
available in January but the event will again be in memory of Eunice Shriver.
MHS Senior Project Exposition
Ms. Farren discussed with Ms. Purdy the possibility of another student working with the
Committee on a Senior Project, such as the traveling wall and last year's breakfast. Ms. Farren
suggested the possibility of tying in the issue of bullying, which was the topic of the ADL
Conference. Ms. Vaughn confirmed that bullying has become a focus at school. Ms. Farren
noted that a number of high school students attended the ADL Conference, including a group
from Barnstable where"ACT" has replaced Challenge Day. The Barnstable students received
their training from the World of Difference Institute, which had also sponsored last year's
Diversity Calendar. Ms. Vaughn will talk with Ms. Purdy about a senior interested in working
with the Affirmative Action Committee.
Committee members discussed the new culture of bullying, including use of cyber bullying. The
discussion included concerns about phone usage at the school. It was noted that with the new
anti-bullying law in place, kids have become more sensitive to bullying and are being educated
and some are reporting bullying abuses. The Committee discussed the new law and its impact.
Committee members discussed the need to address bullying issues early on.
ADL No Place for Hate Community Conference Update
Ms. Farren stated that 44 different communities were in attendance and Mashpee was recognized
for its efforts.
