z
Board of Assessors Meeting Page
Minutes of The Meeting of May l`1994
Chairman Porter referred to Page 3 , Paragraph One, Line ;
he stated that he has no sister and requested the word "sister"
be corrected to read "neighbor" . Leslie Greig referred to the
Last sentence of Paragraph One; he stated that with the amount of
money the neighbor spent, she could have purchased a lot and
built a house on it . Lengthy discussion followed.
Leslie Greig made motion The Board accept The Minutes of The
Meeting of May 1 , 1994 as printed and as corrected; Robert
DeLory made second the motion; motion passed; unanimous decision.
The Board accepted The Minutes as printed and as corrected.
OLD BUSINESS:
Delinquent Personal Property Taxes
Chairman Porter informed that David Bailey has researched
and found a law concerning what methods The Town can use to
induce payment of delinquent taxes . Mr. Bailey is in the process
of completing a letter concerning the matter, and Board Members
have spent considerable time reviewing the lengthy list of
delinquent taxpayers - total of * uncollectable taxes is about
$100 , 000 . The Board is disturbed; Board Members .do not feel that. .
all methods have been exhausted to collect this money. The Board
is trying to come up with a system that would be cost effective
in collecting these unpaid taxes .
Chairman Porter further informed that David Bailey has found
that licenses and permits can be withheld as well as dump and
beach stickers .
Leslie Greig informed that about $boo in uncollectabl.e taxes
is owed by the owner of the Mashpee service station , which is a
char of many service stations. Lengthy discussion followed.
David Bailey expressed opinion that Assessing should not be
put in the position of finding methods to collect taxes ; this is
.the job of the Tax collector . Leslie Greig expressed opinion
that the Tax collector needs some assistance from Mashpee as a
whole - perhaps from the Board of Selectmen . Lengthy discussion
followed concerning various major accounts that are delinquent.
Chairman Porter stated that The Board now has pertinent data
from David Bailey, the lengthy list of uncollectable taxes , and a
method to pursue that might prove helpful to the Town of Mashpee.
