PRESERVATION
Q UESTIONS
QUESTIONS YOU MAY HEAR;
QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE
3. Q. WHY NOT NST SCAN(DIGITIZE) PERMANENT RECORDS?
A. Digitization of public documents is of benefit where storage space is critical,
and offer the public a convenient method of reviewing documents without having
to handle cumbersome books. However, digitization requires a substantial capital
investment in equipment, software, indexing, and document scanning for
implementation. Scanning of early documents which are embrittled, fragmented,
• faded, handwritten, or bound can be extremely problematic, and digitization does
not address the important question of still decaying original records, nor does it
address the intrinsic historical value of the original artifact. Our view is that
professional preservation not only prepares historic materials for safe digitization,
it stabilizes your "best image paper data base" for the application of future
technologies.
4 Q. WHY NOT JUST REBIND PERMANENT RECORDS?
A. While rebinding does provide added protection for the information the
binding contains, it does not address the major problem of ACID
CONTAMINATIION OF PAPER(from the manufacturing process, writing inks,
air pollution and other sources) which is the SLOW FIRE WHICH IS QUIETLY
DESTROYING IRREPLACEABLE INFORMATION.
5. Q. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO HAVE PERMANENT RECORDS
RESTORED?
A. The turnaround time is generally twelve to sixteen weeks.
•
