This is a research project to eval- uate how or whether or not the development of the macroa l gae is affecting fish and shellfish and eel grass areas. It is their belief that macroalgae is wiping eel grass out all together. They will be removing all the ma roalgae from an area 25 meters by 25 meters and thea comparing over time the response of the fish and vertebrae and eelgrass to this removal . The method used will be scuba diving with toothbrushes, The area is 3 feet deep at low tide, 3-1 at high. Mr. Halpern stated he was concerned with saf , .. The stakes will be barely visible at high tide and will not be seen by anyone using a boat at night. Ms Meagan advised the original design was 50 meters by 50 meters but this would be physically impossible to remove that much algae; they chose the areas ever more close to shore to be out of the way of boaters. The stake that would be out of the water is gone and they have added more floats. They have wrapped all of the stakes with reflective tape. If an issue, they will remove the stakes altogether. They will use the post for anchoring to. There are five posts per plot with about 15 floats between the posts. Plastic netting keeps the algae from drifting into the removal plot. Mr. Halpern felt the netting would be a navigational hazard. Ms Be h rma n pointed out this is not within the jurisdiction of the commission. Paul Somerville stated the macr algae is a concern of his and asked to receive updates on their f i nd i ng s.
