Conservation Commission
November 29, 1990
Page 9.
Mr. Kelley stated he proposed to cut brush from decks to 6 foot back from the top of
the bank and leave a 13 foot area in the center. He will prune lower limbs of the trees
in the area. In the 6 foot area, he proposes to cut down to a 2 foot level. He will
leave anything 2 inches in diameter or more, cut down brush and remove dead limbs.
Mr. Coffey asked the square footage where removing vegetation and was told 130 feet
by 40 feet maximum.
Mr. Sherman was on site and suggested leaving a strip in the natural state; he did
not specify the number. His only concern is the cutting down to 2 foot height. He
suggested maybe the commission should invoke the requirement to hire a consultant.
Pis Behrman ashed how this would be cut without trampeling the brush in there?
Mr. Kelley stated a gas power hedger or hand pruning, as the commission required.
She asked how much lawn is on this property and the abutting? He advised there was
none, except for some in the walkway, a crab grass.
Mr. Coffey expressed concern with 5200 S.F. to be levelled in a buffer zone and the
remaining buffer to be severely pruned.
Mr. Kelley stated he could clear to whatever the commission suggests. He plans to
put a 3 inch wood chip base and leave all trees intact; there are at least 15.
Ms Behrman stated brush is more valuable than trees in this case.
Mr. Coffey asked if the client would be willing to have a consultant evaluate this
and assume the $25.00 cost? This was agreeable.
Mr. Homeyer asked the amount of marsh and was told about 10 feet to the high water
point. He would not touch the bank itself.
Mr. Homeyer read from a DEP policy statement. He questioned affecting the product-
ivity of the marsh. It is not going to absorb the nutrients.
Mr. Kelley stated he can leave the buffer as it is, he is open to suggestions.
Mr. Coffey asked if there were time constraints. Mr. Kelley is interested in getting
it completed before winter sets in. If wood chips are put down, it would take better
over the winter if packed down.
Mr. Homeyer asked if they will use a compactor and was told they will use a roller.
PIr. Sherman suggested he flag the height to prune and the buffer strip.
CONTINUED TO DECEMBER 27, 1990 - 8:00
MR. FERRAGAMO returned with the statement added to his
RDA which he read into the
record.
