Conservation commission
Meeting of August 7. 1986
Page 4.
John Varkonda agreed with the necessity to have these raps done and stated more
environmental damage is being done now than any construction will cause* He also
questioned the use of a nylon sock filled with concrete as used in the south., Mr.
Virgilio agreed to look into this. He also stated maintenance will be included
in this project,
Concerning pa f ing areas , Mr. Virgilio advised Pirates Cove has a small parking
area. That section of Mashpee Neck Road is in the book for partial reconstruction.
The parking area is not within 100 ft. of the mean high gin water mark, He has con-
sidered putting up small 4 ft. cyclone fences at Pirates Cove and Great River
because of the residents .
Concerning drainage going into the water, her. Virgilio advi sed that not shown in
the plans because it is uphill is two catch basins , on both sides .
Mrs . Jacobson advised the Shellfish Officer was called and was unable to attend
the hearing but stated he is generally in favor of all three ramps. There will
be some effect t ori the shellfish but the overall effect will be better in the- long
run. He further* stated they would like to be able to recommend using town fac-
ilities
ac-
ilities at the hearings for dock and piers which at tete moment are so poor they
cannot be recommended.
Mr. Virgilio stated the 4 ft. x 8 ft. docks not shown on the plans are removable
floating docks which will be removed i n the winter and stored at the Highway
Department garage. There is no fixed connection with the shore and are only
to tie boats to while waiting. Approval for these must core from the Harbor-
master.
a bomaster.
The timetable is for completion of Great River and Pirates Cove before
December 1 , and depending on the weather, Ockway Bay may be partially
completed.
Great River: Same type ramp, but existing material is broken asphalt with
no grade. Construction will be the sane as Pirates Cave. .He advised that
Bob Courtemarche has received word there is money passed to dredge from the
end of the ramp to the middle of Great River into the channel . The bill was
passed and the paperwork is being completed. This is a most desirable area.
A turnaround is being arranged with New Seabury.. Catch basins will be further
up the street.
There was discussion o f which would be a primary area and should have comparable
parking. Mr. Virgilio stated he is in hopes that the State will provide a parking
area on their land in walking distance from the ramp. DEM agrees this is a good
idea and stated they could charge for parking. There is land adjacent to all
three ramps that could be taken, The only asphalt work will be the apron and
the rest will remain the sane,,
c way Bay: Mr. Virgilio stated this ramp has a very steep incline and th i s
will be a good location for small boats to launch.
John Vary onda stated the incline is very steep and extremely eroded. If run-
off is controlled it will be better for being done.
I . Virgilio stated parking will be at the top of the hill . Catch basins will
al so be at the top of the hi 11 . He asked that the Conservation Officer check
during construction,
