• Fiber in the home—demand is there. 86% of home users are unhappy with their internet
connectivity. Steve said this has to be more of a partnership with the towns, OpenCape, and
probably a third party. He said if you look at the towns being connected(Concord, Lexington,
etc.) at some time the town makes the investment to run fiber throughout the town. The town
awns the fiber and the town decides whether to provide to business, fire/police, homes, etc. It is
up to the town to decide what is in the best interest of the town.
• Steve said this past summer the merchants on Main Street in Falmouth could not get enough
bandwidth from Comcast to process credit cards. OpenCape is working on that problem with
Falmouth right now.
• Steve noted that in Boston's proposal to Amazon Boston listed quality of life in Boston as the
number one issue. Steve said Cape Cod is definitely quality of life. He said you can live here and
work from here if you have great connectivity. This is a way to attract those kinds of jobs.
OpenCape pricing...Steve said OpenCape offers only 2 services:
1. Business service is a dedicated symmetrical service that starts at$300 and goes up to the
thousands. He said symmetrical service is important to business because whatever you download
you get same uploaded symmetrically.
2. GPON (Gigabit Passive Optional Network)is sharing a connection with other folks. This would
cost somewhere between $65 to $100. per month.
Steve said maintaining and operating a fiber network is an expensive proposition.
Bill Nay explained that MashpeeTV is mainly dealing with Comcast. He asked where OpenCape core
comes from. Steve said they buy internet service from providers in Boston or Providence.
Bill Nay asked if there was a way to use OpenCape service and then connect to Comcast. Steve
responded"yes". Steve said even though OpenCape is up 99% of the time, things do happen. He said
they've had outage this past summer because squirrels were eating the fiber.
Bill Nay asked if he wants to send a live signal and connect to Comcast can that be done. Steve said he
couldn't answer but someone in the OpenCape technology area would respond to that question.
Bill asked if they would do a demo test for him. Steve said he could stream out of town hall.
Lolita McCray asked about clarity of OpenCape compared to Comcast since HD not available through
Comcast. Steve said HD is just a format. He said when streaming HD video, Comcast is not able to do so
because it takes too much bandwidth. He said OpenCape doesn't have that limitation.
Bill Nay asked if Mashpee wanted to do their own cable network could OpenCape help put that together.
Steve said he worked for PBS for 17 years. He said doing your own cable network would be a bad idea,
TV is dead technology. People want to watch what they want to watch and when they want to watch it on
Wad; phone; etc. Steve said costs/production, etc. outweigh the benefit. Steve explained that a better
solution for a town is do a bond; do betterment to connect to the home; and get ISP provider to supply the
data package. Then you have all the technology in the town and you can change providers.
Dan Riley thanked Steve Johnston for his helpful comments. The Board expressed their appreciation.
Steve Johnston exited the meeting since he had another meeting to attend. Angela Hurwitz remained to
answer any questions that may arise prior to adjournment of this meeting.
3
