i
Conservation Commission
Meeting of February 5, 1987
Page 3.
Ms Bay 1 og stated piers are not the worst thing for shellfish and she has seen
shellfish farms built around then,
Ms Behrrnan stated this project would l irn i t access to the shellfish area -as it
is covering it over and with this kind of boating activity and the potential
in the future for other boating activity, it could be a disturbance. There
are serious questions about the extent of this project.
Mr. Ryan s to ted w th these 1 ong docks s i de by side, the area between wi 1 1 be
cut off to people. There will be 37 feet between the two docks . Concerning
the depth, Mr. Ryan stated it gets gradually deeper, but this dock is close
to interferring with the natural channel ,
Ms Bay l og stated i n talking with the c l i en t, he has had a mooring in the area
before and is familiar with the shall owners . Whatever boat he has now does
not draw a lot of water. he stated if she could get him into 1 -1 -12 feet
of water, that would be all he would need . She stated that is why she did
not push the dock length any further.
Mr . Rosenberg stated the 42 foot width across the front does not make sense and
is too mucin for one boat .
Ms Baylog stated i f it 1 s high enough for people to get around thea technically
public access has been provided. If you want to shell fish , then you can go
wherever you want as long as it is legal
Mrs . Jacobson stated this is a tremendous number of square feet, effectively
going to be sitting on the bot tom,which takes away that area for s he l l f i s h i n .
It eliminates completely a 2 ' X 20'' space if a boat is going to be moored .
Ms B. yiog stated if they wanted to clam right under the floats there would be
no problem. She also stated she can work with the cl ient on a different con-
f i g u ra t i on for the floats .
Ms Behrman stated clamming r i.ght under the floats would be an impossibility,
especially at low tide and if they are lying on the bottom, there wi i i be no
clams there.
Mr . Rosenberg questioned the walkway. Ms Baylog stated the width of the dock
is 5 feet. The entire length of the ramp is 130 feet X 5 feet wide. The driven
pilings 2 inches X 12 inches and 2 inch X 10 inch decking .
Mr. Rosenberg stated mean low water to mean high water is 80 feet, then another
50 feet coming up. He asked how the 12 inch p i 1 i n s are going to be driven.
Jahn advised once they get off on the p i l i ns above water, they are proposing
posts.
Ms Baylog asked if the commission would rather she look into: 1 a reconfigur-
ation
econfi ur--
ation of the floats ; (2) extension of the pier further out.
Ms Beh rma n stated tine commission would prefer a mach smaller terminal . structure
for the site. This project is grossly in excess . Any structure that would allow
