k -
Public Works Building committee
Meeting of November 1 , 1984
Page 2.
Ernie Virgilio reported that Mr. McDonnell called him on October 25 to inform him
that he had checked his figures for the excess fill and the amount was actually
9,240 yards.
Mr. aiMagg io stated Mr. Pe told the selectmen there was 7000 yards of fill and
only 2000 was figured, so 5000 was an extra, Mr. McDonnell asked why the 5000
was an extra if there was an excess of that on the original bid. 2000 to 9000
i s a large span.
Mr. Re stated the assumed contractor Mr. McDonnell was spearing of bid $40,000
for the Job, not including removal .
Mr. DiMagg io stated that if two contractors bid in the $40,000 range there is a
reason, Woodside Parr is well known. The cost should be absorbed by whoever
rade the mistake. The surveyor should be 'hel d responsible and made to pair. The
contract should not have been let with the large difference in figures. He as ked
Ellis if when the contract was given to him as an engineer, was he not responsible
to figure all the out and -fill even- though those figures are not given to the
bidders. and if his figures dame close to the contractors,
Ellis stated they do not give the amount of out and fill , it is not required.
They try to do a balance out and fill if possible. In discussions with the
contractor, they went all over his figures. Some were low, but the contractor
stated they were right. one was masonry, he was going to use a different mason,
but could not use him, He stated he would stand by it. His cut and fill figures
were low,. but within striking distance and however he was going to do it did
sound all right. My basic numbers were 5000 yards of excess fill . In early
discussions of what to do with the excess, it was to be put in the town dump.
He was to remove it from the site, but was given permission to -leave on the
site. The letter he presented to the committee sent to lir. Cohen would deal
with this matter and it is his belief that things will balance all around.
El-lis stated the cost of correcting the error in the contours was absorbed by
the Architect and surveyor only.
. Ellis presented the committee with the resume of Jack Cartier, the new project
superintendent.
The minutes of October 24, 1984 were reviewed
concerning certification from the welder, certification is only- required on
structural members. El l i s' will get a report from the structural engineer.
Mr. Virgilio stated that after discussing the starting date for the salt shed
with the state, immediately actually me-ans 3-4 months from the date they are
given. I t is estimated they will cone in March l
Ches ter Brown stated they should stay off-site until the site work is completed.
Mr. vi rgi l io pointed out that the building compl etioh is scheduled for January 29.
