they are interested and would consider the proposal as a
possibility, but the Cormnission is not prepared to commit to
anything at this point.
The chairman stated he is very much opposed to the whole
idea. He commented the Air Force should stop wasting their money
and their time on other ideas and concentrate on the basic root
cause of the problem- -fix the plume. He suggested Mashpee should
be reimbursed for every year there is no cranberry crop.
Mr. Sherman stated this point had been quite clearly at the
Meeting which he had attended. Although, Mr. Sherman did suggest
the Commission not ask thea to stop, because they are doing so at
the Cor ni s s i on, s request.
There was some discussion as to exactly what was requested.
Ir. Sherman recalled a memo requesting the .investigation into the
possibility of segregating off of the contaminated areas.
Mr. Green expressed concern that they were unsuccessful in
stopping the plume from coming all the way to the bog, will they
be able to prevent it from crossing the berm.
Mr. Sherman responded that some of these specific points
were made at the meeting he attended.
Mr.. erman reported statements were rade at the meeting he
has made reference to that long term alternatives such a i
cleaning up the plume are being investigated, and that the intent
of the plan is for the possibility of regaining acreage and
profit in the interim.
There was some discussion regarding the abandoned bog being
a wildlife -habitat the Town would want to keep. Mr. Green
suggested moving forward to the point where a plan is presented
to the commission and at which time consideration' could be made
on the proposal .
In response to a question regarding a time frame, Mr.
Sherman stated an EPA representative rade it quite clear~ that
significant Federal review would be necessary which is not
likely to tale place within the next year .
Mr. Sherman suggested the investigation continue
conceptually with the understanding the Commission is not
prepared to sign off until all questions have been answered and
the regulatory agencies have been satisfied. All commissioners
appeared to be in agreement. The Chairman remained reluctant
that a plan would ever be adopted.
(At this point there was discussion as the Commissioners
made references to the map. )
-ll-
