13 May 1999
Page 7.
over again. He recommended doing the,Mashpee River once, leave the stuff
alone and ten years down the road, if it becomes necessary again, then there
may be some different technology .
Mr. Rosenberg stated in order to insert the material, you have to dig a hole
three acres in area, five feet deep. Mr. Taylor stated that would be if dealing
with a flat surface. Mr. Rosenberg asked what happens to that material that
is excavated, 21, 200 e*yr
Mr. Hanks stated if you have clean sand, you would wind up with 30,000 .y.
. f excess material. But if digging out clean sand and you truck it over to
Rppnsst Beach as beach nourishment, you can berm up around the crater
made so that you don't have to dig all that up. In the end you would want t
cover with sand before the topsoil is put back.
Mr. wollon aupt asked, if using the berm, aren't you impacting the soils` e
stated he understands what they are trying to achieve, what they have as a
final plan, but did net understand how they plan to get there.
Mr. Hanks stated once the material sits there, rain is going to rinse it and
over time leach the salt out.
Mr. wirsen asked to where Mr. Hanks stated you would have to drain the
pond and drain it right back into the river.
Mr. Rosenberg stated they would have a pond with material on top ofit and i
you drain the pond you would have to dig all-the silt you put in there in order
to get the membrane out. Mr. Hanks stated that is correct but if building
pend habitat, you need a membrane. Mr. Rosenberg stated it will be a
stagnant pond. Part ofthis is argumentative, at some point you are going t
ask the Commission to make a decision and at some point you are going t
have to talk to the experts. Mr. Danks stated the decision time will come
when dealing with an Order of Conditions and they are far from that at this
point. They are trying to save money.
Mr. Lumsden stated they are looking for guidance from the Commission.
They have done a lot of preliminary work but have not done it all.
Mr. Rosenberg stated if they can solve all the problems, the Commission
night agree with them.
