i
January 2001
Page 4.
Norman an Hayes teras present with Kevin Darrington and Brad HO-Imes.
Two sets of abutter notice were provided. .
Mr. Hayes advised they were asked to have a meeting to find out
concerns and respond. They did this to the best of their ability and did
-r -survey the channel. Ice restricted there but they did accomplish this
n the 29th. On the 30th, there was a storm event that changed things,
2-1/2' of coastal dune, which is natural, on the south side of the spit.
There was ars overwash. They have been able to show where the dune
and beaches are on both sides. This is existing conditions, two days ago.
At the end of the year, they will be doing the dredging. It has been
dredged five times in the past. This is a maintenance dredge.
The Chair asked if they did the entrance to Poneset Bay in 1997?
Mr. Hayes stated yes, in 1996 or 97 and Perry Ellis did maintenance
dredging last year in the entrance channel and they did the inside
channel three years ago. The dredging activity area was also used a
beach nourishment area. They currently have a Waterways permit until
2007 to use those areas for nourishment. It was dredged in 1993 in
response to the 1992 northeaster; 3500 cubic yards was dredged. The
permit was for up to 9000 yards. The depth will go t -5 MLW.- They will.
be looking for 2-2-1/2', 1-1/2' in other areas, from the bottom of the
channel. Photos were displayed. The beach going into the channel is
very steep. The old permits granted for the dredging required
maintaining a 3-1 slope. The dredge depth will be as previously
authorized. They will access through Wading Place Road. They will
cone in through Sandy Keach area and go in through the area of non-
vegetation. They can mount the crane on the beach. The material will
be trucked out and deposited on the beach at the toe of the dune, a 2 '
wide strip. It will be above Mean High Water, tucked against the corner
of the dune. They got a letter today from Natural Heritage that said this
is an approvable Project in their mind. They have maintained a .6-1
slope.
Mr. 'Talbot asked how they make sure they maintain that? Mr. Hayes
advised they will go out and set up rods in the grater that have the
depths shown. He took additional samplings today at U. He took .1
curings with PWC pipe. They can set Mean High Later on a tide board
so the dredge operator can gauge the tide as it goes up and down. For
an overall average, they can get -- . It might be a little less in some
areas. .
