He has been Chairman of the Solid Waste
Committee, Town Energy Committee and ,managed a metal specialty company for
many years until he retired. He's particularly interested in nitrogen pollution and
protection of wetlands.
Jeffrey cross said he's been the president of several big corporations and been on
other boards. He has attended several conservation hearings, and said he would apply
all his efforts to doing something abort the nitrogen waste. He proposed hiring some
young people to measure the nitrogen levels: both in the water and adjacent to it, to try
to pinpoint some areas and take corrective measures against the consequences. He
has contacts at the State, Federal and personal level who would fund this, and he thinks
he can provide enough political push to get cooperation from other groups involved.
Michael said there's been work done, particularly in Falmouth, on identifying the
causes of nutrient loading, particularly the sulfates. They came up with some
conclusions, one of which was that landscaping was responsible for something like
15% which is probably one of the easiest things to correct, at least easier than with
septics, which are the lamest single cause. Falmouth has a Fertilizer Committee, which
through educational efforts is trying to promote better landscaping practices that will
reduce nutrient loading, which is fairly simple to do. He is an advisor to that Committee,
and he'd life to see something like that in Mashpee.
Bob said in addition to the one opening for full membership, we may have an
opening for an alternate membership. We will contact some alternate members who
have not been acture to ascertain this.
2
