Mr. Robert Gill began by providing the BOH with an updated map. He
appreciated the 130HIs ongoing concern with the plumes and their
relationship with the permitting for wells and things like that. He was of
the belief that the BOH and MMR have had a very successful relationship
making sure that they don't place folks in the paths of the plumes. The
annual report has just been published in the last week. They were
excited about this report as it gives a lot of good information on the
program, It was in the Enterprise Newspaper this past Friday. It will also
be in the Cape coil Times on May 7 1h1 2002. They are trying to get this
information out to a broad audience, It has been several years since
AFSCE has put out something with this king of distribution. They do have
a mailing list that they use to send things to people all of the time. They
really felt that it was time to get back out to a broader audience. They
also spoke to one of the radio stations today because they want to
generate some interest. It gives the latest plume outlines and
communicates some of the progress that they have made. The "Fuel spill
One" (FSI), in l lashpee, treatment system has been up and running. It
has knocked down the FS1, There have been some modifications flue to
go into effect with three additional deep extraction wells later this year.
They have been working with the Town of Mashpee and the property
owners in that area. There is still about a 15-year clean up time on FS1.
The nearer timeframe of about -years vire should see the elimination of
the discharge to the bogs. That will be very helpful. "Storm Drain Five
South" SDs plume is starting to collapse in on itself around the
treatment systems. The map shows that there is a much smaller area
affected by that plume. It will still need to be operated by the treatment
system for another two to four years before that plume will completely go
away. They are very encouraged by the progress being made there.
"Chemical spill Ten"-(cs7 ) has made a lot of headway recently with the
delineation of the leading edge fingers of that plume* Those that come
underneath Ashumet Pend. They have a treatment well on the one portion
of that leading edge finger that is called the "TCE Plume". They have
submitted a feasibility study to the EPA to look at what treatment they
may want to do on the fingers of that plume. Through this summer and
into next fall they will start to have some public interaction in what kind
of treatment they will be looking for there.
Mr. Santos asked how the treatment worked on the Ashur et Pond. They
were trying the "flushing" for the phosphorus.
Mr. Gill replied that they put a barge on the pond and fed some aluminum
silicate and-other compounds don deep into the deeper water where
there wouldn't be any fish or animal life affected by it. The very first thing
that they measured was the possibility of a fish kill. That didn't happen at
all. That has been a side effect of this type of treatment sometimes in the
1
