The initial indications are that they <br /> have locked a good portion of the phosphorus up into the sediments and <br /> to get it out of circulation. They won't know for sure until the spring <br /> algae bloom happens here. They will be watching it very closely. As soon <br /> as they get information on that they will be happy to share it with the <br /> BOH. <br /> Mr. Santos stated that he went to the meeting where they were making <br /> the proposal, Years ago he worked in theenvironmental field. He knows <br /> that there was an outbreak in the bottom of the pond. They never did <br /> stop the source of what was feeding the plume. 1t was absorbing the <br /> liquid after it had leaked out of the tank rather than plugging the tank. <br /> Has that been accomplished? <br /> IVIr. Gill stated that they have started a small-scale pilot study to look at <br /> intercepting that phosphorus before it cane into the pond. There were <br /> several test beds of iron put on the shallow water just north and east of <br /> Fisherman's cove. They have been monitoring those and have determined <br /> that it has been effective enough that they are going to expand that pilot <br /> study into a lamer area. They are working with the UMAss Dartmouth on <br /> that project. They are going to be expanding that study this summer and <br /> determine if they meed to go to a full scale application across the entire <br /> footprint where that -phosphorus plume comes into the pond. The initial <br /> indication is encouraging. Between cutting that off and locking up the <br /> phosphorus that was already in the pond should serve as one two punch <br /> on the phosphorus issue. <br /> Mr. Santos asked if that was the new technology that had been tried. <br /> Mr. Gill stated that it was the first time that it was that sleep. The <br /> phosphorus has been used even on other ponds on the cape. It was <br /> usually spread on the surface, which generally results in a fish Kill.
