1
bit. They were taking a look at the infrastructure that exists in that area
because of its proximity to the contamination that they found coming off
the J3 demolition area. They were faking a look at whether or not some or
all of the components of that system will be of use in the cleanup of J
contamination in that area.
Ms. Warden asked if on the western boundary, what are the little dots in
the pink areas?
Mr. Hill responded that he thought that they were where perchloride had
been detected.
Ms. Warden asked where it was coning from,
Mr. Hill stated that they assumed that it was corning from the base. They
really haven't found a strong source. After all of their efforts today there
are some trace lever of perchloride that have been detected, as they may
be aware...is dealing with this as well.
Mr. Santos stated that they peaked his curiosity. He looked at their
legend. He wanted to know what they meant by current gun position and
current mortar position.
Mr. Hill responded that over the years they have had some established
ifiring positions where the troops would bring an artillery piece out to the
gun position, for example, a howitzer and fire at the impact area targets.
They are areas that they were studying as well finding some
contaminants in the gun positions as well.
Mr. Harrington asked if they had stored material there,
Mr, Hill responded that they didn't store anything there. They would bring
their weapons and their rounds out there for training exercises, which
basically involve setting up the weapon and firing it. They take the
weapon with therm on their weekend training.
Mr. Harrington interjected that just the exposure from the firing is
leaving.0: P
Mr. Hill agreed and added that those firing positions are established and
they don't move them around. The army has ceased that practice and no
longer fire on those positions.
Ms. Warden asked if they had anymore detailed plans of the areas in
question specifically Johns and Ashumet pond.
